Ok, so here's the deal, im 17 i have had panic attacks for a while ... AND IT SUX!!!! I mean forreal. And my symptons are sort of different, ever since i was little i have had thesse big fears of my tounge being swollen or im going to swollow it. I kno my tounge is not swollen, but when i panic, it feels like it is. I also know I cannot swollow my tounge, but then again when i panic it feels like im going to. Another thing that worries me is sometimes i will start getting shortness of breath like i just ran or something ... is this normal? Are theese thoughts just in my head or do I have something serioulsly wrong with me? please help!! oh and by the way i am on medication, im on the new one. Effexor XR.

I starting having them when I was your age too (now I'm 33). I've been on meds, joined a support group, did hyponosis, cognitive behavioural therapy....blah, blah, blah....

First, no, you are not going crazy. You are not crazy at all. One of the symptoms of panic attacks can be shortness of breath or the sudden feeling of weakness or as though you would faint. One thing that works is to say to yourself, "Do not add fear to the fire." In short, that means don't add any scary thoughts to how you're feeling such as "I'm going to swallow my tongue" or "I'm feeling so out of breath I might faint." Those kinds of thoughts will actually heighten the panic and make you feel worse. Keep saying to yourself, "don't add fear. I'm ok. It will pass." Distraction is a great way to get rid of those attacks. For example, if you're on the bus and suddenly are having an attack, focus on something on the bus and in your head, describe it in as much detail as possible. I've also recited a favourite song or poem in my head. That seems to work too. Good luck. I know they're brutal but nothing bad is going to happen to you...just focus your mind elsewhere.

yes these are all normal reactions to the panic attacks. if i hear or see a train i panic right away.i have such a panic attack i shake and stomp the floor of the car like i have a brake on the passengers side, lol and then i cant breath and my lips get numb and all i can hear are the train alarms and the trains roar. i can also feel my heart beating really hard in my chest and chest pain with that. i am being treated for this too, i have panic attacks in all different conditions. and i have had them since i was about 13 or 14 yrs old. i am now 54 and still having them. i know how you feel and my sympathy goes out to you. keep on the medication. if it doesnt help inform your doctor and maybe he can change doses or medication for you.have a merry christmas.

hey, it is ok to feel that way when you are in an uptight situation. Sometimes the symptoms occurs may be due too much stressor in you. As for me when i'm in a panic state, i would stutter and it's worse especially when i'm doing a presentation!!!.. =D sometimes i do have cold sweat too..

For my advice, just try to relax. do lots of deep breathing. always think that 'i can handle this WITHOUT panicking' and if u do encounter problems in life, talk it out with someone that u can trusted to and to those that are willing to listen to ya or if u need a time out, enjoy the nature (beach, sunset.. etc). it helps for me!.. oh ya the new meds that u r on.. it can help to calm ur nerves down.

well, what you're describing is exactly what happens during a panic attack. i have a social anxiety disorder and panic attacks too, so i really empathize with you luv. effexor is a mood elevating drug. my mom has been on it for years. i take xanax...only when i need it, as it is the #1 over-prescribed, highly addictive medication out there. you might ask your doctor about cymbalta...i have found it to be a miracle med for me...i've been on it for 4 months. you can really help yourself when you start to feel a panic attack coming on. esp since you have such great insight with your own symptoms. practice deep breathing and calming "exercises." and a sort of "mantra" you can tell yourself to get through the immediate situation, and feel safe. i am so not minimizing what you're going through...just offering some techniques that can help you keep it to a minimum during the times you are able to. tell your doctor all of your symptoms so he/she can give you the most assistance possible. very best of luck to you. have you tried keeping some small mints with you for when your tongue feels like it's swelling? the coolness of the mints help me...might help you too.

Do some research on panic attacks. (there are websites with message boards specializing in this disorder) Research itself may help you feel better.

I am sure it is just in your head, as you say, but if you need to, go to the dr and get checked out. It may you feel better.
