There is no semi-permanent tattooing on the market today. People say that in the UK, for instance for cosmetic tattooing because they suck at it and it doesn't last long enough the way it should.

That being said...in the VERY NEAR future there will be tattoo inks that can be removed with one shot lasering and they are working on another one that has a predetermined life span.

Check out Freedom-2 ink - I can't wait until it becomes available. It will forever change the tattoo industry!

EDIT NOTES: for the person with their micropigmentation mumbo jumbo below - it is a stupid name invented by doctors because they did not want to say the name tattooing. It only lasts a short time for some people because of substandard training - a tattoo is permanent when done correctly - sure the color fades but it will never return the skin to its normal condition - never - ever. Don't give these posers any credibility. It is a well known fact that cosmetic tattooing needs to be touched up over time to look good. All tattooing will fade. PERIOD.

No, there's nothing that lasts that long that's still non-permanent. Some crappy tattoo artists have tried putting tattoos in the upper layers of skin, where they will fade, but you're more likely to end up with a blob of color than a tattoo that totally disappears. There are inks in development that are meant to break up faster with laser treatment, so only one or two treatments would totally remove the tattoo instead of several repeat sessions. But as far as I know it's not in use yet, and it still requires laser treatment to remove. Other than that, tattoos on your finger and toe nails will grow out, so they could be seen as semi-permanent tattoos. Look for an experienced artist that's done them before, if the tattoo goes through the nail into the nail bed it might be there to stay.

All I can say to you is don't do it. I got a semi permanent tattoo 6 years ago and it should have faded away by now. It hasn't. It's an absolute mess. It is on my right upper arm and I spend a fortune on camouflage creams to hide it. I am also speaking to solicitors about being permanently marked with a product that is meant to disappear after a given time. The tattoo has ended up uneven after spending time in the sun, with some bits darker than others, not to mention that the person who did it made a total mess of it in the first place, with uneven lines and thicknesses through it.

There was this thing in the 90's about these 'new' semi permanent tattoos that were not inked so deep into the epidermis. The problem is it is very difficult to know exactly how deep you are inking and therefore the majority of these tattoos never faded.
It just amuses me thinking of all these college boys who thought they were really cool getting spiders webs etc on their faces assuming it would fade and now 10yrs on trying to get a job as a solicitor with it still there!

Except for the fact that they are wrong in calling it that when referring to any kind of tattooing. Semi-permanent makeup is topically applied long wear makeup that washes off.

All tattooing is to be considered permanent even if it fades over time. It does not totally go away unless you have it lasered off and that can still leave some color. My tattoo artist confirmed this - tatt_bratt is right on the money here!.

If at any time you consider getting a tattoo with the knowledge that you're not going to want it after a while, just don't get it. They hurt...not a lot, but enough that if you're going to endure that pain, it is a complete waste for only a couple years. Just get the lick'em and stick'em tattoos or henna and be done with it.

Temporary tattoos are for temporary people.

Henna tattoos last for aprox 2 weeks. They're also semi permanent tattoo kits you can buy that you paint on and set. These are generally used for movies and can last about a week. I live in LA and I find them in make-up/beauty supply stores.

Get Henna. They last for a week.

Lately, there's been a home tattoo removal product advertised on the Howard Stern Show. Can't find its name yet.

I've never heard of one before. There it such a thing as laser surgery that will take if off if you don't want it anymore.
