no, they are not illegal, and they sure as hell don't cost $4500...
i've got a romanian SAR-1, and i bought it during the assault weapons "ban." that basically means that my AK doesn't have a bayonet lug and it's muzzle isn't threaded for a flash suppressor. all told, with a 10- and 30-round magazine, i paid $350, new out of the box.
now that the "ban" is over, you can find AK's made during the ban for about $250-300 used (again, that means they won't have bayonet lugs or have threaded barrels). Add about $50-100 for a new, post-ban one.
if you want a "real" AK (as in one that's fully automatic) your talking about paying $200 for an ATF stamp, and a helluva lot more than $300 for the rifle.

There are actually very few real AK-47s in America.
AK-47s are made in Russia and they are a FULL-AUTO carbine. You need a special federal license to own or possess one, and they really limit who gets one.
There are many, many SEMI-AUTOMATIC "copies" of the Kalisnikov action made in a bunch of former Communist controlled countries like Romania, Yugoslavia, etc. etc. These are made for the American market and sell for $280 for the cheap ones up to $600 for the better quality ones. You can also buy kits that need US made parts added to them and get away with one under $220.

"But the truth is they have never been a good weapon. They were designed by the Russians for the same reason they are used by third world armies and terrorists - because ther are cheap to make automatics. They also jam alot. The M16 is a far better assault rifle - seen by many as the best world wide - and you can pick them up for $3000 brand new. However it is hard to control the spray when fully automatic and thus seen as dangerous when used for security in the home. The MP5 however, not so dangerous, and shorter so easier to carry"
WTF?
You've never fired any weapons before, have you?

ALOT of ignorant answers here. The truth is, you can find AK variants and copies as low as a couple hundred bucks! Mostly just cheap copies though, you'll pay a pretty penny for a GENUINE "Automatov Kalishnikov 47". And by the way i'm talking about semi-auto AK variants and copies, if you want it full auto, you'll be paying $200 for your stamp and ALOT more for the rifle.

WOW, $4500 ....can't say that i paid that much for mine. What i did was i found one with a beat up stock on it. Then i put an after market synthetic stock on, had the barrel redone, and it looks great! I would gladly ship it to the guy that said $4500. Honestly i can't say that it's of much use though, except for messing around.
