Security generally. WWII gave rise to the ' intelligence community ' the way prohibition fueled and channeled power to the organized career, corporate criminal. I have trouble distinguishing between the two nowadays.

Take a look at what is happening today as a result of 9/11. Then imagine doubling or tripling the security level.

It made people aware that there might be someone out there who intends to hurt you. Here in Maine, my parents, as children, knew there were German subs patrolling in the same waters where people were fishing every day. Once in a while strangers with a thick accent would show up in town, watching people and asking wierd questions.
