Since you are not specific in your description, I have to presume you are referring to the back of the neck, rather than the front.

The purpose of pain is to let you know something is wrong and needs to be taken care of..In the case of the neck, should you have any restriction of motion to either side, would indicate unequal muscle tension. This can cause a multitude of problems presently or become a chronic condition (if not treated properly).

It is import to find if there are structural changes taking place. Possibly being caused by an ongoing adaptive process of the spine itself.

To determine this, perhaps you would consider a visit to your local doctor of Chiropractic and have this established and treated. The earlier the treatment, the less alteration will take place. Left untreated may develop into a progressive chronic situation and create other symptoms later on.

Massage really helps, also try gently rolling your head around in a circle first to the left and then to the right (if you get what I mean) but keep your mouth open and don't make any sudden movements. If the pain is cause by stiffness, it is important to keep the neck mobile, keep moving it so that it doesn't stiffen up any more. As a last resort you can take some pain meds.

If you find you have neck pain a lot then here are a couple of tips, don't go to bed with wet/damp hair and perhaps invest in a pillow that provides more support when you sleep.

I find sometimes that running hot water on the neck will help to soothe it.. Sometimes I sleep funny and when I wake up my neck will hurt so much.

Depends on several things. How long have you been in pain, how old are you, is the pain radiating down and arm or down your back, is there also pain in your hip on the same side as the pain?

Gentle heat is a good stop gap measure along with otc meds. If the pain is radiating you might need to see your doctor. Don't have massage if thepain is radiating, it will just aggravate the nerve that is already underpressure.
