This is not too high if the puppy is coming from a reputable breeder. AKC papered doesn't mean much either. Your breeder should be showing the sire and/or dam and have titles to prove they were worthy of breeding in the first place. The breeder should have proof that the sire and dam were properly tested for hip dysplasia, any potential genetic defects screened for and the eyes checked annually. They also should be VERY picky about you, or any other person interested in a puppy and have a huge questionaire for you to fill out about your intentions with the puppy and the living conditions you will be providing. The breeder should be requiring a limited registration, meaning any puppy must be spayed or neutered at the appropriate age, unless the buyer intends to breed, in which case it is required that they go thru all the health testing and certifications and that the dog pass before the limited registration will be lifted. You would also pay a pretty penny more for a puppy deemed "breeding potential". The breeder also will have a commitment to the puppy for the entire life of the puppy. If for any reason an owner can't keep a puppy, the breeder requires that the dog be returned, regardless of age, so that a suitable replacement home can be found. They don't want to see the puppies they produce end up in shelters and rescues.

So if this breeder you are considering is ethical, reputable and breeds to the standards mentioned (and more), then YES, the puppy is worth $900 to get a well socialized, happy, healthy pet. Anything else that you might find for less money runs the risk of not being backed by ethical breeding and can possibly come to have an array of medical issues later down the line that will end up costing more than the healthy $900 pup would have in the first place.

Here's a good link to learn more about ethical breeding. Accept nothing less than this, or you're looking at backyard breeders who don't know enuf to be breeding in the first place.

$900 is not too much for an AKC registered Boston puppy- PROVIDED you get him from a breeder referred to you by the Boston Terrier Club of America website. That is where you want to go to get a healthy Boston bred by a person who is involved in the breed- not from a "puppymiller" who just breeds Bostons for profit. You want someone who does have show quality pups but will sell you a pet quality puppy.
I agree that adopting mixed breed dogs is a wonderful way to get a great pet. Sometimes it is not. You have no idea what the dog's history is- medical particularly. And you have asked about a Boston specifically. Go to the website and talk to a reputable Boston breeder. There may be some dogs on the website in Boston Rescue, as well. Whatever you do, have fun with your new Boston Terrier!

900.00 is overpriced for a Boston Terrier, my guess it is from a pet store, I would advise you to find one else where. Your best bet would be to find a breeder in the newspaper,it is a more personal experience and you can find them much cheaper in there. You can also find great pets on www.petfinders.com many times they will have pure bred dogs, you can also check the Humane Society sometimes they have them too. Stay away from the pet stores when buying a dog, many come from breeders who breed them in unsanitary and unsafe conditions.Puppy mills. I also had one more idea, try a Boston Terrier rescue group.

Way to much.
Remember this, any good breeder who loves the dogs has very few litters, sales for less then most and will offer health guarantees and well as may have you sign a spay and nueter contract if you buy as a pet.
You can look in the back of most dog magazines and find breeders, even if there are not any in your city or state call one closer to you, they may know of someone. Look around, talk to people and get to know the dog world, see if there is a local club in your area you can become part of. Great people and you learn a ton about blood lines and such. even for a pet it is still important.

First of all-adoption IS a loving option, but if you want a healthy, purebred Boston Terrier that is bred to AKC standards-yes, a breeder is the way to go. There is nothing wrong with buying from a breeder.

$900 may sound pricey, but you will probably be getting a good quality dog. I know of some Bostons that have cost a bit less but 900 is not outrageous. Just make sure that the breeder is knowledgable and responsible. If they seem like good breeders with good dogs, I say spend the money. You will have a healthy, loving, ADORABLE Boston for your family!

I agree with Holly. I wouldn't spend almost $1000 on a dog I wanted as a pet and wasn't going to show. But if you absolutely want a boston terrier, try looking at your local humane society...you might find one that needs a home or you might find a cute dog or puppy who totally takes your heart.

I would not buy a so called "AKC" dog ever. Just because it has the AKC label in front of the breed dosent meant anything at all on how the dog was bred and raised. They say AKC so they can make more of a profit while in fact most "AKC" dogs are poor in health because of inbreeding and many times are the product of "backyard breeders". If you really are set on that specific breed look in rescues and shelter groups and petfinder.com. But if not there are many "mutts" out there who need a loving home and are usually much healthier than "AKC" dogs because they were not line bred. Also dont buy from petstores, hopefully you already knew that.

I do not think that it is too bad of a price. It comes down to where you are located (puppies usually cost more on the coasts) and the fact that it is holiday season. BUT IF IT IS A PET STORE, WALK AWAY!!!!! Most of the puppies from pet stores are from puppy mills even though they say that they are not and they generally will not be very healthy or at least have a higher potential for health problems. If you only want a pet I would try a local shelter or rescue, or if you have to have a puppy go to a local breeder. Plus, if you only want a pet it doesn't really matter what company the puppy is registered through (APR, CKC, etc.)

no way! don't pay that much! i have been looking for a boston terrier too, and i've found HIGH quality bostons for less than $400! like another poster mentioned, ALWAYS check the pounds and rescue centers....u can help save a dog and pay hardly nothing for it. sometimes they even have puppies available...even better, the spaying/neuturing, vaccinations, and health checks have ALREADY been done!!

Yes, I would say so. You can get a healthier and less costly pet at your animal shelter. As long as you truly love your dog, it doesn't matter how much you pay, but if you only want him/her for the looks and breed, getting a dog for that much would not be a good idea. My "pound puppy" (I adopted him) cost $50 and he's the sweetest and most loving creature ever!
