The first answer said no, but his reason appears to say yes. Open the account before the end of the year. Then you can make contributions in early 2007 to count for 2006. Ask your tax preparer how to do this.

No, you can only open a Roth from Jan. 1 of the same year until April 15 of the following year. You have up until April 15 to make any contributions for 2006. You can make contributions to your 2007 on Jan. 1, 2007.
