I want a hard top VW Bus 1972 - 1974. I noticed a pop-up style for sale on an online auction. Can you take the top portion off and be left with a hard top? I realize their may be a square hole but I was thinking I could have someone make a custom rag top to cover it.

Like all ready posted it could be done, but why?

Most people would prefer to convert buses to campers, not back to lower trim levels. While the huge bubble top roofs of some camper converters did make the bus very top heavy, impossible to park in a garage, kill gas mileage, the pop up was pretty good for camper use. Even if the rest of the camper stuff is gone it could still make the base for one someday. Now if your dead set on going about this here are your options (well that I can think of at 2am). Graft on another roof or patch the current one. You know your metal skills, if you can do it then cool, if not. Then it won't be cheap. Another option you talked about: streetbeats makes custom ragtops. If you install them 100% then I hear they are ok, meaning no where as nice as the originals, but they should look ok and not leak to bad or at all. They work best on complete flat surfaces, like trucks and suv have. Now if you don't get it 100% they leak, look horrible and you just wasted a lot of cash. For my 2 cents if it's a good deal and you want the bus, then jump on it and learn to live with it. If it's not what you want then, wait for the right one to come along. It's better to wait then get stuck with something you don't want, which seems to happen to a lot of owners.

You can remove this feature, but yes you would be left with a massive hole. It is far better to continue your search and find a real hardtop.
