Water, sugar, cocoa. Tomato paste needs sugar to balance the bitterness. I'd use crushed tomatoes instead of one of the cans of tomato paste in the future.

I know this sounds crazy but it really does help. Add about 1/4 cup cocoa and 1/8 cup sugar. It will balance out your chile and give it a great flavor. It will also help with the too much tomato paste accident

I would add some stock, that will cut the tomato flavor plus I imagine your chili is a bit think so that will take care of that too!

Try adding some onion powder, and maybe a dash of chili powder, and just a bit of tomato sauce!! Even another can of beans will help! Am I invited?? :)

Add more onion and chili -- if you are just using the red powder, try adding chopped green chilis. Will add a different layer of flavors and cut the sweet of the paste.

when i make chillie i normally don't use paste i make mine 2 to 3 lbs hamburger meat .chopped onions and grn peppers sometimes i use a red sweet pepper also 2 lg cans whole pealed tomatoes 2 cans chillie beans, 2 small cans tomato sauce. and 2 packet of spicy chillie mix packets 1 and a half bottoles of V8 mmmm good. thats how i make the poor mans chillie . you can use 1 can of dark and light kidney beans if you like but i found it to be too many beans in my chillie the v8 act as a thickening agent like paste but not as bitter. so the answer to your question is (USE V8) TO COUNTER ACT IT
