I have a Coton de Tulear, but when I move out I am so getting a Golden Retriever!

Remember that the higher grade you get to the less time you have to spend with a dog. This is a big commitment for your mom and you might want to get a dog towards the end of middle school or in the summer so you have time to spend with it while it is a puppy.

I love Border Collies, but this is not a breed for anyone who can't spend a good amount of time with them. They get bored really easy and become destructive as a result of finding things to entertain themselves. They also really should have a "job" to do, so planning to persue Agility or Obedience is really a good idea.

With the smaller dogs, I like the Pomeranian, and Pugs. On the medium sized dog, the American Eskimo is a beautiful dog. And on the larger dogs, you can't beat having a Lab.

i can give you several but i first would like to say that all of my favorites require significant daily exercise. i am an active person and i have an 8 month old 65 pound german shepherd mix and if she doesn't get out for about an hour each morning she gets very hard to control. the first thing you need to know is that alot of dogs are very very smart but the smart ones need training and exercise and lots of both so please understand what that all takes before you get a dog. too many people think the occasional walk is enough and for some dogs it is but for most of the smarter breeds they need lots of exercise every single day and if you can't do that then find a dog that doesn't need much exercise. so here goes: i love german shepherds, they are beautiful just to look at, very athletic its actually fun to watch them run and one of the fastest learners you can get. but again they need alot of time for training and exercise otherwise they are very energetic and a hyper dog is hard to control. also some shepherds can get over 100 pounds and keep in mind they are VERY strong and will need to eat alot at that size. i also love huskies, they might be the best looking dogs you can get and they rarely bark, but they can be very independent even with lots of activity outside. they are heavy shedders. australian shepherds fall into the high activity catagory but smarter than almost any dog. golden retrievers are great all around maybe not as active as the others but still lots of energy but very easy to train and basically just excellent in general. for some less active dogs try a basset hound, they are cute and lots of fun and they tend to be a little less active and not quite as big. lots of terriers are great like norfolk/nowich terriers, very cute, small, and good with younger kids since they are only about 15 pounds. and actually some of the very large breeds can be great inside dogs since they are soooo big they don't need much exercise in most cases. for example a mastiff is a great family dog and needs much less exercise than others but i've seen them get over 200 pounds and thats as big a dog as you can find. but they are very gentle if trained well. also newfoundlands are good with kids and good inside they are more active than a mastiff and love the water but again figure around 150 pounds which just means alot of money for decent dog food. do some searches on the internet for dog breeds, look for ones you like and read about them to see if they would fit your family's lifestyle. good luck!

Siberian Huskies have always been my favorite. But they are not really a breed for a first time dog owner.
