Who waits to be polite? Smile and stick your hand out. The only rule I've heard of is that it's okay for 'ladies' to shake hands from a seated position (whereas men rise to shake). I would rise anyway, out of courtesy to a newcomer who is standing.

who ever begins the handshaking process, always give a firm
handshake instead of the milky toast variety. i have shook a lot of hands in my lifetime and i have judged people (maybe wrongly) by the way they shook hands. when you shake a woman's hand you shake her fingers not the whole hand unless she initiates a whole hand shake. i lived in Germany for six years and they have truly developed hand shaking to a true art form, you can see someone going in to the market, shake their hand and then see them again while going out the door and then there is more hand shaking. when in doubt stick you're hand out, and the bosses will think that you have initiative when you are first.

Yes, I agree with Stimply. Take the initiative and be the first to not only stickout your hand but look the other person in the eye and say your name with a big smile. Oh and don't forget the breath mints first, lol.

If a woman wants to shake hands, she puts her hand out first. A firm but not crunching three shakes is common. Sometimes a man will just lightly take hold of your hand. It is up to him to withdraw his hand first.

No, there is no rule. Hold your hand out if you want to shake the other person's hand.
(It is considered rude to not shake someone's hand if they are holding it out, however.)

Always extend your hand once you have said hell-o or nice to meet you.It does'nt matter who puts their hand out first.Give a firm handshake.Do not squeeze too hard and do not be limp.Always be firm, not hard, just firm. This applies to men and women.Shake everyones hand the same.Weak handshakes can insult women.

If you are being introduced to someone, don't wait, just stick out your hand as the introduction is being made or right after both names are spoken.
Take the initiative.
