It really depends on your definition of nice. There are several base scents that you can go with such as a fruity, musky, clean and spicy. The best thing to do is go to a store and test several colognes. Make sure that smell coffee beans in between colognes so that you can clear your 'sniffer'. I prefer cleaner colognes, they are not overpowering, such as Issey Miyake, DKNY Be Delicious for a fruitier scent, but one of my favorites is Duc de Vervins, it's a little bit muskier, but I also call it 'man in a bottle.' It depends what he's into.
If he's preppy: go for abercrombie and fitch cologne. Kinda of hard to find unless you have one around.
If he's like the r&B and hiphop scene: go for Sean John Unforgivable. Its expensive but I love it. You can find this at Macys. They have a nice Xmas set for $55 for the cologne and deoderant.
If you want to be safe, Calvin Klein Romance is nice too.
And if you are on a budget, Tommy Hilfiger True Star for men is really good and cheap. You can find it even at Walmart or Target or CVS. You can get for less that $30.

Lady, listen up. There is one cologne out there that he will love and you will love to have him wear. I have worn most of the better ones out there and there are several that are great, but Escape is the one and only one. Everywhere i go women want to know what i have on. As soon as i tell them they remark that they are going to get it for their man. I first found out about it in the nineties when my wife got it for me as a gift, has been my favorite ever since. You can get it at Macy's or any of the better department stores. If you buy the gift set-cologne and after shave , it will run you $60.00. You won't regret buying this one gift....KECK

Lacoste smells really good,you can get that at Dillards. Or Fierce from Abercrombie and Fitch.

My favourite men's cologne is by "Givenchy" and it is called pie...not like apple pie but the mathematical term. Ask someone at the cologne counter about "pie". It is so nice!

burberry for men.
but then again.. i wouldnt go that route for a gift for a guy. what if it turns out that he doesnt really like it?? thenit would be a total waste.
you should get him something that has a meaning behind it that only you two know about. get him something that he could have use for everyday that will also remind him of you.
be creative and unique.

Don't get him those tacky kinds, such as Axe or Tag. Try getting him SWISS ARMY! Trust me, it smells awesome and all my guy friends have it !
