I want an acurate caliber for a white tail. I want it to be big enough to kill it 1st or 2nd shot. I will make shots anywhere from 50-400 yds so i would need a pretty powerfull and long range round.

I will also shoot through rough forest and open field.

Simple truth is, there is no best calibur, just whats best for you. Pick whatever your comfortable with in the high power range (or shotgun ga for slugs) and go with it. Since you say that you'll be in rough forest, you may want to consider a shorter barrel length. Any good high power will do the job in the range you've indicated. A good shotgun will do just fine in close ranges (mine is very accurate to 150 yrds). Once you pick the calibur you want, you still have to decide whether or not you'll use a scope. With the longer range shots, I'd advise one.

For white-tails i prefer the 25-06, it has plenty of power to take down a whitetail and has great long range potential. However there is no "perfect caliber" as many have stated. The 30-06 is the most widely available rifle and ammo, so many choose it. The 30-30 is a classic white-tail caliber and a lever action such as a Marlin is a great deer gun out to about 200 yards. If you ask me the magnum calibers, 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag., are overkill for whitetails, with these you have so much power the bullet may not even get proper expansion in an animal as small as a whitetail. Use your own judgment when purchasing your deer gun, most rifle calibers will do the job, so pick a rifle based on preference of style, action, etc.

The 7MM might want to have a reliable quantity of balk. Any bolt action will be a reliable determination. perhaps evaluate a .25-06 high quality. You get the mild balk of a .243 and the flat taking pictures of the .270 high quality. i take advantage of all 3, yet my favourite determination is the -06. Savage makes a cheap bolt action in each of the above calibers. you may also locate a Remington for a reliable cost. also, brush aside the advice of the guy who stated you do not opt to sight in a bore sighted rifle. that is ridiculous! Bore sighting purely receives you on paper, so that you may have an a lot less annoying time of sighting on your rifle.

what car is best for going to a formal dinner or hauling plywood? figure out the typical shot and conditions and work around that.

with that said, 7mm Mag or 30-06 are good for med/long range and 30-30 or 45-70 are great brush guns.

i shoot a .308, but used to have a .270. Killed a couple deer with the .270 under 40 yards. buy lots of ammo and practice.

30-06 with a 180 grain bullet, NOT the 150 grain. You place the shot right and you wont need the second. I never shot twice at a deer in my life and i'm 43.

I swear by the 30-06, but my brother in law swears by his 25-06 at 100 grain, the bullet travels alot farther in a straight line versus the 30-06 at 180 grains..... There is no best caliber, it's your preference and if you shoot 300 meters plus or closer..... alot of variables to factor in.

.270 win. is a very flat shooting round. With a little practice 200-300 yd. shots will take only 1 shot. (thats all it should take anyway)

Depends on what you shoot well. Not being a westerner, I cringe at the thought of a 250 yard shot. I'd just hunt harder. But I suppose if you put in tons of practice....

7mm mag will drop them in their tracks. 30 yards or 400 yards.
