Being sad about what's happening in your life is not the same as Clinical Depression.
Clinical Depression (the "brain disorder"), is caused by an imbalance of chemicals within the body, which stops the otherwise normal processing of synaptic activity, as well as the release of dopamine and similar neurotransmitters.
Most often, being depressed about things in your life is treated thru counseling, and work to change the things that depress you.
Clinical Depression is treated with medication...Often these days, anti-depressants are used. It is also possible to correct the chemical imbalance thru other types of medication that will kick-start your body into making the chemicals that they stopped making. Diet and exercise are often key factors in treating this, as well.

I found out that my depression which man oh man can be explained by a sucky life is because I have anger issues. I don't get angry enough! Like when I go to get car insurance and rush for over 2 hours back and forth between the registration office and insurance office and almost miss my daughter getting off the bus and make my husband late to work and STILL end up having to try again the next day! Through it all, I'm thinking "why Me? My life sucks! I hate this crap! Nothing ever goes right for me..." instead of thinking "What the heck is wrong with these people? And jeesh what a bunch of idiots!!" I try to avoid angering everyone else to the point where I don't place the blame where it is due.. on the person who is messing things up for me i/e the Italian lady who knows no English misinterpreting my license information.
I was taught growing up that I was never allowed to get angry. If I showed displeasure, i got my butt kicked. I still carry that with me today and internalize everything.
So yeah, to answer your question. You can have a bad life and still be depressed. Its not how your life is, it's how you respond to it.

If you have something to be sad about and you are sad - that is an appropriate response. Depression is when you are sad no matter what - even during obviously happy times.
Everyone in their lives has some happy and some sad times - and sometimes there can be a longer period of sad events that happen, and it is completely normal and healthy to feel sad at that time.

there are bunches of different types of depression...some depression is situational... meaning the situation sucks and you are depressed about it.... some depression is chemical where everything can be going right and you'd still be depressed....
only a psychiatrist can tell you if you are depressed or not... why not make an appointment... you'll feel better if you get the help you need....

Being sad or unhappy is different to depression. Ask yourself if things are good are you happy and if things are bad are you unhappy... because if you're depressed even when things are good you'll still be unhapppy. But it is often hard to tell if you are depressed when your life sucks. Talk to a doctor. I did years ago and now I feel better.

There is a book called the DSM IV. Look up the criteria for a clinical depression diagnosis. I would think that you are probably depressed if your life really is that bad. But, you may not be "clinically" depressed.

yep... depression is multi-faceted like many things in life. just cuz ur depressed doesnt mean ur chronically depressed like others. it may be a passing phase, or u could have manic depression. so, be depressed right now if ur life is like that now, but if it passes then it was just a phase. ppl go in and out of depression like they do styles in clothes. what u r feelin and goin through is normal... but it always helps to vent and talk to someone :)
