Cri du Chat is a genetic mutation caused by the spontaneous deletion of material on one of the arms of the 5th chromosome. There are several variants of the disorder that results, and although it is genetic in cause it does not appear to be an inherited disorder but a spontaneous mutation which happens during early embryonic development. It is characterized by a meoling like cry in the newborn, which is how it came by the name. In French, it means "cat's cry". The disorder usually causes difficulties in speech and communiction, and the severity depends on multiple factors, including how much information is missing from the chromosome.
