The Dodge 1500 pickup is primarily for lighter towing and payloads I recommend the 4.7L V8 for economy driving and the 5.7L for heavy duty towing. The Dodge ram 2500 is available with the 320hp Cummins 5.9L Straight 6. The only engine that I recommend on a truck this size for both fuel mileage and performance. My advice to you is to wait for the new Cummins V8 yes you heard me correctly V8 diesel by cummins. The SAE rated horsepower is 360hp with over 600lb feet of torque at just 1800rpm. Can you afford to wait a year or two? This is the cream of the crop engine. Believe me. As an engineer I couldn't tell you how perfectly they designed every bend on the common rail system. It's astonishing. Do a google search and try to find out more on when they come out. I remember I read an article on this engine in truck trend. Hope this helps.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, with a 4.7 V8 engine. She's 4x2 and I use her for towing, work, and pleasure. I keep up on oil changes, brakes, ect... I've never once had a problem with her. I've towed my 71 Mustang from Fort Lauderdale to Gainsville with no trouble. I've taken her out muddin a few times and didn't have a problem.

Anyway, good luck in your choice. Hope that helps.

You have to ask yourself, what are you going to be doing with the truck? Light duty, medium duty, or heavy duty? If you are using the truck for running to Home Depot on the weekends with just picking up crap here and there then the 1500 will work just fine. Etc, you get my drift here.
