A female dog is not neutered. She is payed, and as someone else mentioned, a vet will remove the ovaries and uterus.

Spaying involves the removal of both the uterus and the ovaries.

And.. this is or should be done prior to their first heat cycle (which usually occurs between 6 and 9 months of age) have a significantly reduced chance of developing mammary (breast) cancer compared to dogs who have had even one heat cycle.
Spayed females can't develop pyometra, an infection of the uterus that can be quite severe and can even result in death.
Spayed females tend to have more even temperaments and do not go through the hormone-induced mood swings that intact bitches sometimes have.

A small slit is done in the dogs abdomen after the area is shaved. The uterus and ovaries are then removed. After a couple of weeks you go back and have the stitches removed. It didn't bother my dog at all. In fact I had a hard time keeping her quiet so the stitches could heal.
It definitely makes the dog healthier and happier. I think they bond better to you also.

I believe they remove the uterus and ovaries. For females the process is called Spaying. Neutering is what is done to male dogs

You neuter a male dog and spay a female - take out the uterus and ovaries. Better for the dog, helps prevent cancer.

Since girl dogs are spayed and boy dogs are neutered, the first step would be to find a vet who can do a sex change operation. :-) Then after your girl is changed to a boy, the vet can neuter it. If you mean spaying your girl dog, then the vet simply does the equivalent of a complete hysterectomy.
