Hay all,

I was wondering if I can trim my parrots claws. They are razer sharp and when she is climbing all over us she scratches.
If I can trim them, at what age can I trim them? She is 12 weeks old.

Thanks.

Yes, you can trim them. Ask a vet or someone who has experience in caring for parrots for pointers first, though - you can hurt your bird if you don't know what you're doing.

It would be much better to have that done by someone that knows what they're doing. Birds are squirmy and it is easy to cut into the quick of their nail. They they bleed. You should have some Kwik-Stop in your birdy first aid kit (it's bird - septic powder like what men use when they nick their skin while shaving). Or you can use flour but don't do this if you've not done it before. Birds, being the delicate and small creatures that they are, have little blood to spare and can bleed to death in a very short time if the bleeding (either from a blood feather or from their toes) isn't stopped within a minute or two. Have someone show you how and always have someone else hold the bird after you learn how to do it.

Parrots claws need to be trimmed on a regular basis to prevent breaking and splitting. You can purchase clippers at your local pet store, however, caution is needed when using them. A bird's nail has a blood supply and if u cut them too short, u can cause her/him to start bleeding (not to mention hurt him/her). If you haven't done this sort of thing before, you may want to have your vet show you how. Personally, I file instead of clip. My bird hates the feel of the clippers and has been known to bite, but she will sit quietly and talk to me while I file her nails.

You can also buy cement perches for your parrot that will help keep her/his nails to a more manageable level! Good luck!

I'm not sure when you can start trimming, but you must be fully aware of the dangers. Here is an excelent website on bird first aid for bleeding.

You can trip the nails with clippers with a file. You may want to have the vet show you the first time, just be safe.
You can also buy perches for your bird that will help keep their nails filed.

I too just file my birds nails. He is a cockatoo and he just loves it. He hates the clippers so i take him to the vet when they get long. Im afraid of clipping into the blood supply, and also this way he is mad at the vet and i get to be the good guy. In between the vet clippings i just use files. Im not sure the age you can start doing it...i dont really think there is one. Just take caution if you do it yourself- i would strongly advise having a vet show you how.

Yes they should be trimed regularly. Mine is small so I just use my nail clippers. Be careful just to do the tips as the nails can bleed and hurt if done wrong. Some vets and pet stores can do it for you

Just trim them alittle bit.....or just file them if your bird will let you. You don't want them to bleed....

they are just like dog nails and if you cut to far they could bleed...i think you should wait until you have it for at least one year...but until then you should put a towell on ur shoulder or where ever the parrot is...
ur welcome
