what does this mean? a few people recommended i do it. i have pretty fine/thin (i'm asian) dark dark brown natural hair, & i regularly keep it jet black.
i'm considering dying it brown, but someone said to strip it first. can anyone tell me more about this? thanks!

maybe it was "striping"??? but both of them spelled it "stripping."
perhaps i am missing osmehting...

You do not need to strip your hair!!!! Your going from black to brown not black to blond. Go to the beauty supply and buy a small amount of bleach and some 20 volume peroxide. Mix them according to the manufacturers directions. Now to this add some shampoo. It's good to have someone with you when you do this. Now shampoo your hair in the sink so with the mixture so your friend can see the color working. Work the hair like your trying to squeeze the color out. Rotate the hair shafts between your thumb and index fingers. It may take a few shampoos, and each shampoo should take 10 minutes. This will bring your hair to a brown color. Note: It will be a warm brown. If it's too warm buy an ash blond color. Take the developer that comes with color and poor half out and refill with half water. Now mix and apply all over for 20 minutes. Done. Good luck.

no matter what you do you are going to have a problem with red dry hair that feels like straw. I don't recommend it unless you have it done professionally because hair color layers like paint. Some one has to watch it carefully and avoid the zebra stripe effect because the hair color usually isn't applied evenly and bleaches out VERY UNEVENLY. The putting on a color over that usually requires great skill, many colors available on hand, and artistic talent in order to paint the color on evenly on the multi toned stripped hair. It is better to let the hair fade naturally, and it will, then use brown refreshing shampoo 3x a week until it grown out. Then you can dye it lighter without bleaching it.

you will have to strip it of the black dye before you can reapply a lighter shade of brown. Most deposit dyes will not lighten dyed black hair, so you must remove as much color as possible. Stripping beforehand also lets the new color have more dimension and shine. If you are doing it yourself, head over to a Sally Beauty Supply and pick up some Uncolor. it will remove the jet black and leave you with an base ready to dye.

Don't do it...at the very least, bleach it. Stripping can really damage your hair depending on the current condition. Since you're are only going to brown, you should bleach it just enough to lift the colour out. Good Luck!

Stripping it is taking the color out of it. In order to strip it you have to bleach it. Then you can dye it any color you want
