If you're making a cake, you can use waxed paper, but for cookies or anything that doesn't have a batter that would cover the paper, you should either use the parchment paper or grease/flour the pan.

You could use foil, as long as you spray well with cooking spray to prevent sticking, however DO NOT USE WAX PAPER!!! It will melt. If you are making cookies however, look into purchasing a slipat. This is a non-stick baking mat that is re-usable and washable. You can get one for ~$20 and they are excellent. Nothing ever sticks. This is the preferred baking mat on the Food Network as well.

You can line pans with foil, but you will have to grease it if the recipe says to grease the pan. I like to use a silpat for cookies, but they're $40 a pop. I always use plastic wrap to roll out cookies and crusts, I think it's pretty forgiving.

ALI IS CORRECT. Do not use wax paper if it is showing (cookies for example), it could burn and cause a funky taste.
