Absolutely. SDTVs were specifically created to receive HDTV broadcasts, but what they do is reduce the resolution for 480i which is basically what a standard DVD movie produces. (Done so that anyone can afford a digital television). You have a tuner built into the TV that receives HD broadcasts, but downconverts them to "analog" so that it can be displayed on the SDTV.
Another thing a lot of people aren't familiar with is that you can get HD Satellite or Cable boxes and connect them to any TV through a composite video cable (yellow). Say you had an HD in one room and an older analog set in another, or an SDTV in another room you can have an HD Satellite box in the main room, and have the same box in the other room, but just connect a coaxial or composite cable to the TV and still watch the HD channels, just not in HD resolution.
Hope this helped.
ADD ON BASED ON OTHER COMMENTS:
SDTVs can receive HDTV braodcasts!!! They have the same tuner built into the TV that HDTVs due, just not the resolution and progressive line doublers that HDTVs and EDTVs offer. EDTVs and HDTVs are similar other than EDTVs downconvert all signals to 480P (same as progressive scan DVD Player). SDTVs will accept all HD signals, but will downconvert to 480i - basically like satellite or no progressive scan DVD player. The reason that the FCC made the law that all TVs 27" and larger must have an ATSC tuner is so that people can receive HD broadcasts and not have to buy an HDTV that they may not be able to afford. Also when the analog cut off date comes up on February 17, 2009, some consumers will be eligible for two $40 vouchers to use at an electronics store to purchase converter boxes to make their TVs SDTV capable. Yes and no. Not all SDTV's can receive HDTV signals. If you look at the 36 inch Sony WEGA TV line, there are two versions. One is SDTV and the other is HDTV. The SDTV cannot receive HDTV signals. I think most people are confusing SDTV and EDTV televisions. EDTV televisions can receive an HDTV signal. Another distinguishing spec is to see if it has a digital tuner. If it does, then typically it can receive an HDTV than downconvert to the native resolution.
If you look at the specs, it will tell you whether it supports those signals. The lesson to remember is that just because it supports it, doesn't mean it will display it in that resolution.
