"put him outside.
hell crap out there. ive seen him do it." -Ron White
put him outside for a while. when he "goes" outside, reward him. you cant rub his nose in his dukey and have him understand that because he did it he was wrong. if you catch him in the act yes. try to get him on a feeding schedule so after he eats you put him outside for 1 hour for him to do his buisness. when he does reward him. this will take time at first so be sure you can devote this time to him or hell keep on staining your carpet.

There are a lot of free house training articles on the web, just Yahoo! it
Defiently avoid spanking or punishing your dog when you find the poo. Dogs live in the moment and can not connect what he did in the past to the present. The thing he will remember is that he was spanked for leaving the poo on the carpet and not punished for the actual action of pooping. So next time he will poo somewhere out of site so you can't see the poo. In his mind, if you can't see it, i don't get spanked.

Whoever told you that is doesn't know how to house train a dog. Never hit your dog under any circumstances. There are a number of ways to house train a dog. You can use a crate, and the first thing you do after you take him out of the crate is take him outside. Make sure the crate is big enough for him to turn around in, but not too big or he will poo there.
Positive reinforcement worked for me. I would take my dog out very regularly. And make a big happy fuss over him when he pooped outside. I would reward him and give him lots of attention. If/when he had an accident in the house, I would be upset at the mess, NOT the dog. If it is just poop, you can be angry and upset when you have to clean it up. Let the dog know you are upset at what he did. Be angry when you pick it up off the floor and angrily throw it away. Pay little attention to the dog, just the mess. He knows he did it...he will learn you don't like it.
Secondly, get some Nature's Miracle. Clean your floors with it, and carpets if he poops there. Get his scent out of everything he goes to the bathroom on. Males will mark their "spot". Whether it is urine or poop, the scent is there. You have to get it out. Spray and wipe the floors a number of times to make sure it is gone. Carpets need more treatments, and I have used it in my carpet cleaner and it works well. It takes longer for carpets, but it will work.
Whenever I had to clean up my dogs mess, I would throw the paper towel on the floor saying "YUK" loudly..and angrely throwing it in the garbage, or outside in the garbage.
It didn't take him very long to understand that going in the house made me unhappy, and by rewarding and praising him when he goes outside showed him I was happy. They just want to make their human happy.

I am sure some 'expert' (just joking) told you to do this. This is wrong. the dog needs to be crated when you can't watch it, and be taken outside every 2 to 6 hours (depends on how old the dog is), on a leash, and be told to 'go' (you want to teach the dog to go on command). I'd use a suppository (you can use a paper match---sulfur end up the anus to start peristalses). While the dog is actually going, give the dog a small treat---a cheerio is just right.
If the dog doesn't go, back in the crate. Clean up the 'mistake with vinegar & club soda---never clean up with ammonia. Obedience training at the same time helps because the dog gets used to YOU being in charge.
There is no magic---& the dog NOT housebroken by the age of 6 months may never be reliable. In fact, you may have accidentally 'taught' the dog to defecate indoors,

DO NOT SPANK THE DOG ON THE NOSE, OR ANYWHERE ELSE! What kind of moron would tell you to do such a thing? Take the dog out after every meal, at bedtime and when he awakens in the morning. Maybe it is a medical problem that needs to be addresses by a vet. AND, don't yell at him. It isn't his fault.

The crate trick is fantastic, and works, but add this:
What you need to do is take the dog to the poop and say NO... then pick up the poop with paper towel, or something, and put it where you want the dog to poop, then say Good Dog in a very sweet voice.
Leave the poop there so when you take the dog over there to go, he sees it and is reminded thats where they are meant to go.

you should never punish your dog for mistakes in housetraining. He won't understand, even if you catch him in the act, it will only make him afraid to "go" infront of you.
Teach him the proper place to go using positive reinforcement, it's far more effective. For the first day, take him out once an hour to the place you want him to go. When he's successful, treat and praise. He'll get the idea very quickly.
You should never ever hit your pet under any circumstances.

Glad you asked!! You NEVER HIT A DOG!!! You need to pay attention to it so you know when he has to go outside! Take him out, when he goes, tell him he's a good boy, clap and make a big deal out of it so he knows he pleased you. Bring him in and give him a treat. If you do this every time, he'll want to please you and do it outside. But, you have to pay attention to how he shows you he needs to go out. Does he stare at the door, go sit by it or what. You can train him to speak at the door too. Ask him if he wants to go out and when he gets excited tell him to speak. Bark so he knows what you want. When he does, give him a treat. He'll get the idea in nothing flat. Most dogs need to go out 1/2 hr after eating so that's a good time to start. If you talk to your dog, like you do a person, they will learn to understand you! Good Luck!

Only if you catch him in the act is it okay to punish and I only punish if it is say my five year old dog who knows better. But if you are too harsh, he will just go in a place where you cant watch him. The best thing you can do it give lots of treats and praise when he goes outside. Then he will want to go outside.
