It really does depend on the equipment. I know i did this with my dvd player, sending the HDMI to my TV and a fiber optic cable to my reciever. It didn't work at first, so i went into the DVD menu and told it not to send the sound out LPCM. I forget what i put it on, but it was the only other option. The HDMI was expecting LPCM, so when i switched it sent the sound out my optical port. I also did this on my cable box using DVI, but since DVI doesn't have sound anyways, i'm not sure it had the same effect.

Hope this helps a little. i have a Samsung DVD player and TV.

You have to have this type of setup because projectors don't have a surround sound system and I have never seen digital or HDMI out on a projector to send the audio to your receiver.

Most likely it will work. But it LARGELY depends on your DVD player or digital STP. Some of the sources automatically disable the digital fiber or dig. coax output when they sense the HDMI in use.
