Ferrous sulphate is an iron supplement should only be taken on the advice of a doctor. It can be hard on the digestive tract. It comes in pills and liquid. I suffer from anemia from time to time and take the pill form. I find the liquid smells awful. When taking any form of iron supplement, always take it with food. This makes it easier on your stomach and will help avoid nausea or stomach pains.

If you take antacids, take them one hour before or 2 hours after the dose of iron. Ditto for anything with calcium. Both of these will interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron. However do take iron with a source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body absorb the iron better.

One final thing to be wary of--iron can cause constipation so make sure you get plenty of fibre. It can also make your bowel movements tarry but that's normal with iron supplements.

Ferrous Sulfate = iron (FeSO4)... This is a reputable source for drug info - this in the page on ferrous sulfate http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a682778.html

Let your doctor know if you are going to take it. Iron is the main component of hemoglobin which carries oxygen in your blood - and every part of your body needs oxygen.... That's why people feel crappy when their iron/hemoglobin is low. But too much of a good thing can be bad for you too - so you may not want to load up on iron unless you need it.
