I have excruciating pain in my heels after I have sat for a while and then get up to walk. Could this be spurs?

It could be. I had heel spurs 2 summers ago. I bought the shoes Crocs and they went away. Try those shoes. They look dumb but they help. Seriously. My doctor reccominded them, and after wearing them for a month the spurs went away. Go to your doctor though, spend the money, it's worth it to get them feeling better.

Heel spurs do not go away unless you surgically excise them? The pain is actually the inflammed plantar fascia ligament near the spur. The spur forms from years of stress at the attached heel bone. If you have pain after getting up after sleeping or sitting for a while, try aggressive achilles stretches, ice for 15 min 3 X daily, and purchase good shoes( Crocs sandals and/or stability gym shoes such as Asics GT 2011, New Balance 800 series). If pain does not improve in several weeks, go to a good podiatrist.

Both denman and the other answerer are right. It feels like so many pinpricks in you heels when you stand up or walk. They are in fact small proturbances on the heel bone. Some develop these in advanced age. A temporary is to use footwear with cushions inside. The permanent remedy is to get these proturbences scratched in an operaion though they may come up again also. It has something to do with things going awry as age advances, some imbalances developing inside.I sympathise with you for I know how excruciating is the pain.

It is a numbing pain that feels like you have a thumb tack in the ball of your foot. Not fun !
