I actually know someone who was flying back from Thailand and connecting through LAX... he was pretty drunk and they wouldn't even let him past Customs for about 7 hours, let alone on the plane!
You can have alcohol before you fly, even a lot of it, as long as you are still in control of yourself. You get turned away from a plane when you aren't in control. The big reason for this is a very drunk person becomes an obstacle and a hinderance in an emergency. If there's a crash, a drunk person won't be able to evacuate without help (if at all) and could very well end up causing OTHER people not to be able to evacuate. If the flight attendants and/or gate attendants think that you may be too drunk to be able to function in an emergency, you're off the plane. And I see it happen pretty frequently!
Personally, I'm glad... with 200 people all trying to get out one or two exits, and panicking already, I don't need to have to climb over the drunk passed out in the aisle too!

The flight attendant has the right to throw anyone off the plane who is drunk, billegerent and anything else that could have an impact on other peoples safety or interferring with the duties of the flight attendants.
But...The Pilot has the final say.
You are only allowed 2 drinks on our plane or 2 double shots. Now that is crazy

Doesn't make sense. It's not like he was flying the plane.
Unless he was being loud and obnoxous, there should be no reason not to let him on the plane.
I agree if they don't want drunk people on the plane, don't have bars in the airport, or serve alcohol on the plane.

yeah, it's forbidden. FAA regulations. Because when u consume alcohol your blood pressure rises and combined with the pressure from the aircraft you could have a heart attack or something like that.. but don't worry, flight attendants are CPR Certified.

Your friend was an idiot, and drunk passengers should definitely be kept off (in fact, it's an FAA rule). The fact that they serve alcohol doesn't mean anything... they will cut you off if you're drunk.
