Probably since matches were created, and when people noticed that it got rid of the smell easily.

Matches came before sprays, air fresheners, etc. Back in the day, (before smoking was outlawed EVERYWHERE), some smoker found this out. All you non-smokers should thank us smokers for actually making the air you breathe better!!

I just read about that woman that did that on a plane, they landed it, then would not let her back on.....how odd, why didn't she just spray perfume?
