If you are still using them - Why? What are you doing to lower your carbon footprint? I'm only interested in people who believe that humans can effect climate change - If you don't believe in it then you obviously are not doing anything.

So Eva - you don't believe the Al Gore and Tom Brokaw hype that we can all make a difference by lowering our carbon footprint? They say that even turning your power strips off (even when all appliances are already off) helps. If they think that helps than Christmas lights and fireplaces would make a huge difference. Obviously not one person doing it, but if everyone who believed in it did that would make a difference

Helmut - why are you so hostile? Carbon footprint is a Brokaw and Gore buzz word - it's not mine. I'm sure you have heard of abbreviating things - it’s not that hard to figure out. I don't care if you don't believe in it and are not doing anything about it anymore than I care if people who don't believe in Jesus don't prey to him. There would be no point. I'm only interested in people who believe in it and want to know what they are doing. Doesn’t seem to be too many believers around these parts.

Wow, I actually hadn't thought of not putting up christmas lights (: i don't have a fireplace, but if i did, i would probably be using it.

what i'm doing: making sure to turn off lights when i'm not in the room, turning off electronics at night, bocking heat leaks in my home, combining errands, driving a (fairly) fuel efficient car (30-34mpg), replacing my light bulbs with fluorescent ones.

e-mail me, we'll talk more! BELIEVERS UNITE!

We are using holiday lights but we set our tree up later than we used to, and we don't have a fireplace. I don't feel we must give up warmth, whether from wood or fossil fuels and the happiness on our children's faces that x-mas lights bring, to save the planet. Walk instead of drive, invest in energy saving appliances and light bulbs, eat less meat or just give it up, buy locally grown food when possible, stop using plastic, wash laundry with cold water, take short showers, unplug small appliances when not in use which is most of the time...so many little things add up to lots of energy saved. Also, watch An Inconvenient Truth, then focus on the solutions, rather than the problem.

It's carbon dioxide, not carbon!

Why do you continue to use a computer and sit in a room warmed by combustion of hydrocarbon fuel? Turn off ALL your luxury devices and migrate south, where you can be prey of carnivorous beasts, if you survive the migration!

BTW, I've done quite a little over my lifetime to lower not only my CO2 "footprint", but also yours!

Huge amounts of co2(sorry) are released into the environment as the rain forests are cut down...this is a major factor in global warming....not Christmas lights...they are small beans in the big picture.
Well, I guess If you expect people to give up Christmas than good luck...

I turn off everything in my house when not in use even my computer monitor...but I don't think that a special holiday that people will go for it, not having Christmas lights that is.

I am, in fact, not using either of those things. I could be doing much more to lower my carbon footprint, though.

i don't have a fireplace and i am just decorating my apartment with a wreath this christmas. also, i don't have an air conditioner. i only used a fan all summer long even though everyone told me i was nuts! there were a few hot days, but it wasn't too bad to be without a/c.

I actually asked the electricity company who had grossly overcharged me on my bills if I could just light a fire and cook ol skool.. outside my place instead of using expensive electricity..
