Impossible to answer - you would need access to top secret military information for a lot of the figures.

If you go to www.flightaware.com you can see the exact amount give or take.
The website shows ANY aircraft on an IFR or VFR flight plan. Someone incorrectly pointed out that private planes are not shown. Business jets are almost ALWAYS on an IFR flight plan and as such, will also be included in the count. Smaller planes such as single engine Cessnas etc will also be included if they are dealing with air traffic control facilities.
Usually its about 3500 at any given moment, with WAY more in the morning and evening rush hours. Looks for lots of them on the East and West coasts!
Ciao
PS: This website is for the US only. There is no good way to determine all the planes in the world

they are thousands of routes and 24 hours in the dqy everywhere so there must be 1000s of them. They are all detected on radar so that they can't collide. There is air space for each country too and rules for flying within it between different countries.

i am going to school to be a pilot and a few weeks ago, one of my teachers said that there was i think like 2400 total in the USA though. don't quote me on it.
but this all depends on the time it is. I mean there isn't going to be nearly as much flying at night as during the day and everything.

go to www.flightaware.com. Usually when I look there are 4000-6000 in the US. But this is only commercial & cargo planes. No private or military.

Dunno, impossible to count them. But I read somewhere that, worldwide round the clock, there are planes taking off much more frequently than you can snap your fingers quickly. And they're (almost) all landing like that too.
