The baseline of a softball diamond form a square with a side length of 60 feet. The right fielder catches a ball on the first baseline, 20 feet beyond first base. How far does she have to throw the ball to reach third base?

Stan's grandfather gave him $2 on his tenth birthday, $4 on his eleventh birthday, and $8 on his twelfth birthday. Stan's grandfather says that this pattern determines that he will give Stan $14 on his 13th birthday. Stan says that this pattern determines that his grandfather will give him $16 on his 13th birthday. Stan's sister, Stacey, says that either amount could be correct because each follows a pattern which begins "2,4,8." Who is correct? Explain.

100 feet.

You have a right triangle. Side A = 60 feet, Side B = 60 + 20 feet, Side C, the distance between the fielder and 3rd base is unknown. Since it's a right triangle you can use the Pythagorean theorem. A^2 + B^2 = C^2 .. 60 squared is 3600, 80 squared is 6400, add the two, you get 10,000. The square root of 10,000 is 100. That's how you get the answer, 100 feet.

Stacey is correct. Grandfather's pattern starts with 2, and then he adds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc. Stan's pattern he is doubling the last. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64.

The softball needs to be thrown 100 feet.

Out of the three, Stan, Stacey, and Stan's Grandfather, Stacey is correct in that both 14 and 16 fit a pattern formed by 2, 4, 8 but if the man giving the money says the amount is $14, I'd think the grandfather is the most correct.

It's interesting that the amount Stan got on his ninth birthday isn't mentioned. If we were to assume $0, neither theory holds as Stan's theory (doubling) would mean he got $1 on his ninth bday. If the grandfather's theory (increments increase by $2 each year), Stan got $2 then.

I'm still going with the grandfather.

First...forget my geometry.

Stans grandfather is using the pattern of the difference increasing by two on the even scale. So 8+6 is 14...because 4-2=2 and 8-4=4. Now, Stans pattern is doubling. 2x2=4, 4x2=8. In Stan's theory 8x2=16. Now, if Stans grandfather wants to cheap out, he can just give him $10 for expecting too much.

Answer 1 100 feet. the triangle formed 60 x 80 x100 Pythagorian theorem

answer 2+4+8= 14

2x2 =4
2x2 = 8
8x2 = 16

both are correct but 16 is more correct in that there is no element in the pattern that would explain the 4 (2+2)
