Can I please implore you to reconsider? If you're not in a Japanese sword class (and by the wording of your question, I assume you aren't), you don't really need one. Swords are like puppies- they're nice to have but they need to be cared for. If you'd like some information on Japanese sword instruction, I could give you that. But please, don't buy a sword. As was said before, most swords sold on ebay (and on the net) are pure decoration stainless steel. They pale in comparision to the feel and handling of a properly made sword, and everyone I know who's bought one put it in a dark corner to collect dust. A lot of money for that, yes? But in closing, if you are absolutely insistant on getting a sword, buy what is called an iaito. It's a non-sharpened sword that has the look and feel of a real sword. Most sword schools will insist you buy one of these to use first. But keep in mind, these must be cleaned and handled properly as well. I hope I could help you.

If you want to buy real ones with the real hand worked steel there are several people in China selling them on EBay. Somewhat expensive but worth every dime because the steel is stronger than the stainless the cheaper swords are made from. The stainless ones aren't allowed in my dojo because they break to easily and could hurt a bystander.

Do a search on EBay for Katana.

EBay is the WORST place to look if you don't know what to look for.

You could really get ripped off if you don't know how to tell quality.

www.bugei.com

or www.swordstore.com are good.

any place that sells "stainless steel blades" is not selling anything worthwhile. Stainless steel will break and leave nice little shards for you to pick up.

anything stainless steel is a "wallhanger" if you just want to hang it as a decoration, there is nothing wrong with that. but if you want it to cut, then buy a real sword. If you aren't spending around $1000+ be very afraid.

Stay away from paul chen, that stuff is GAbage.

I have an early WWII era Japanese katana I'm selling. It's a traditional made blade and not factory produced. It's not only signed by the smith but is dedicated "A work made to commemorate the going to the front of The Second Sino-Japanese War". I'm selling it for 600 if interested.
