Excellent question. I personally consider it a disease, but that does not mean it doesn't have significant behavioral components. Our bodies are biologically designed to conserve energy (store fat). The environment we live in has changed. 100 years ago virtually everyone labored daily burning 4000 calories a day. But now most of us have a sedentary life-styles and barely burn 2000. Additionally, calories dense food is cheap and readily available, often time much less expensive than healthier food. For example, at a fast food place you can get a cheese burger and fries for 2 dollars, but a salad costs more than $5.

Additionally the difference between being fat and thin is not as much food as you might think. An additional 100 calories a day would cause someone to gain about 20-22 lbs a year.

I believe for some it is a disease for example they could have thyroid issues. For others however, its a choice and even though they might want to lose weight its a struggle and its easier for one to do nothing than to get up and take care of themselves. I don't think you should feel sorry for an obese/overweight person because i don't believe that people in that condition want any ones sympathy they just want people to see them as they are not as the waist size.

I think some overweight people become that way due to depression and unhappiness, others have made the choice of not eating healthy. Some of it is because the parents encourage their kids to eat wrong, by letting them have chips and other junk food, rather than enforcing a healthy diet, and the habit continues into later life. I see so much of that when I do my grocery shopping. I think we should feel sorry for them, yes, but we need to understand it may be their choice, it may be an underlying cause, and we should not look down at them.

In the traditional sense of the word, it's not a disease. It is not a physical affliction that acts on its own. Some people refuse to stop themselves, or haven't the will power, but it's purely mental. It is no different than an addiction to video games, tv, or sex. If overeating is a disease, than anything that you want to do and never stop yourself from doing is a disease.

Well, some obesity is caused by medical conditions, such as thyroid or pituary problems. Some obesity can be attributed to medications. Some obesity can be attributed to genetics. Some obesity can be attributed to laziness...

We should feel compassion for them because life is much harder for them. And depending on the cause of the obesity, we should feel sorry for some people.

Who cares anyway? What matters is what's on the inside of people.....
