Where I live a guy is selling a 95 or 96 Monte Carlo with 3.4 engine. 107,000 miles, new water pump, timing chain, has leather interior. Looks like a decent car. He wants $3,500 for it. Any advice?

Check kbb.com they can give you a blue book value on the car

If you are serious about the car first I would take the car to a neighborhood (Mom and Pop) mechanic. [If you go to a dealership or Firestone type they will charge up to an arm and a leg] Have a compression check of the cylinder heads. Also have a thorough inspection, brakes, exhaust, tires, etc. Check for codes with a dianostic. If you are lucky and know someone, you may get this done for $100, which is money well spent to know what you are getting yourself into. Does he have documentiation for the timing chain and water pump repair. If he does, then you'll be ahead of the game. The gaskets will all be good. Check online and NADA to determine what the going rate of this make and year are. The mileage is a little below the national average, so you're ok there. Good luck with that

Personally thats a waste of money. Way to many miles on it get you a newer used car with under 50,000 miles on it u can get them for around that price or a little more

Where I live you can barely buy a running car for that price. However in the process of negotiating a final price, offer him a lower price and work your way up to a settlement.
