The use of force for hire in this country is not new. Company strike breaker goon squads were once prevalent. The level of training does take the stakes up a notch however as the use of highly trained private millitary forces represents a measure of force that may exceed the needs of simple property defense. O.k. 1, Blackwater isn't a paramilitary they are a security company, mostley in the training of tactics. So companies that hire blackwater, either hire them for security or training security forces. Yes the military has contracted blackwater to train SBSS (Ship Bording Search and Siezure) to Navy. Most of the trainers in Blackwater are former special forces. NO they are not mercs. It is not a "civil liberty" to either attack or storm private property such as an oil refinery.

If their weapons are legal, what is the difference between them and an armed rent-a-cop besides the level of training?

Defending what is yours to the best of your ability within the law does not violate someone else's "civil liberty" to commit crimes.
