Marmaduke is a newspaper comic strip drawn by Brad Anderson from 1954 to the present day. The strip was created by Anderson, with help from Phil Leeming (1955-1962) and later Dorothy Leeming (1963-1969). The strip revolves around the Winslow family and their Great Dane, Marmaduke.

Marmaduke is drawn from life by his owner. Great Danes actually do a lot of the goofy things shown in the comic strip. They are convinced that they are lap dogs, and they can cover your face with slobber in one swipe! Their mission in life is to prevent couches from flying away, and they perform this duty with complete devotion.
They are utterly devoted to their owners, a very gentle and calm breed. They are not completely mature until they are 3 years old, that is a long puppyhood. They can be quite a handful as puppies, and it goes without saying, that they need obedience training from the time they are very small. There is nothing worse than a 150 lb dog out of control, who has never been taught basic manners.
I'm lucky enough to share my house with four of them, 3 blacks and a brindle. There are 6 recognized colours and the breed is a very old one.
