It's learned.
Not everyone can get it. Many just come off as stuffy, or even vain. But a very few talented individuals are actually able to achieve smugness.

There are really no excuses for anyone to be smug. You have to actually choose to be mean.

It took several years for me to learn to be smug. In fact, it wasn't until halfway through college that I properly developed and began to use my new talents in smugness.

I think it's a reaction to Christian questions and mocking that we can't help but feel a general sense of smugness.
