I agree, people who are a UK resident should only receive treatment. Why should the UK have to spend its taxes for foreigners health care?
People coming to this country for care should be sent back home, I know its not nice but it is not the UK's problem.
The NHS is struggling without this foreign problem.
Do people want to pay more taxes to treat these people?

It would be heartless and unfair to make that rule.
I do think however that the NHS should only be free to those who contribute to our society by paying taxes here and those who come here later in life to settle should be able/required to put something extra into the NHS system as a means of joining the health service here. It need not be simply money, it could be in the for of some free work to help the NHS like voluntary services?
Abiding by our laws has nothing to do with the humanitarian aspect of health care, it is rather a question of deporting those that do not belong here who are criminal. Most of the deadly criminals are ruling our country like our mass murderer Blair.
If we were not fighting illegal wars and destroying other countries, spending on defence way above what we need for defence the NHS could be awash with funds and we would probably not be debating this question.

Well its a fair point however, remember that over 3 million Brits have homes abroad, mainly europe, if they fall ill there they have free tratment under a reciprocal arrangement with all EU members.
If you were not to treat paople over here (even criminals or the non law abiding) what would the alternative be? Let them bleed to death? Turn them away from hospital in the middle of a heart attack etc..... as a civilised society we couldn't reallly do that could we. Even the law breakers who are in Jail would get sent to hospital when ill.
What is different however is the health tourists, who come over and grab free treatment (non a and e) and then scarper back home without paying. This however should be stopped at source by the hospital making thorough checks before non a and e admissions. Nat ins number and so on.

I love my country. I moved here when I was 6. I don't really fit in 'back home', been away too long. I work for the NHS and if I fall, I except it to help me get up again. I am proud to be British. I have travelled. This place really does rock. But it is a democracy, so if the most of the people, the vast majority of whom were born here, said I couldn't have access to this or that, or wanted me out, then I would have to live with that (or not). I would hate to leave the only place I can call home and also not to be an equal with my fellow subjects.

You mangled the Q, but it is obvious you are a person who believes everything you choose to read. You are never likely to need the NHS, also obvious. Your attitude is of one who has more than enough to get by & looks down on the rest of us.
Let's clear the BS here. I am a US citizen w/o insurance & little income. I have talked with English & Canadian friends about their health systems also. Bottom line. If you can't pay for it, you will receive inferior health care under any of these systems. People, citizens, are needlessly dying as a result, in the countries having the world's highest standards of living.
I speak from both research & experience. I am sure I have emphysema. I am not eligible for govt. assistance for this because it is not "officially" diagnosed. I have had several free screenings indicating this as a possibility, but the cost of the tests to confirm & thus document the diagnosis is not covered. I can't afford them. I could have applied for govt disability & they would cover the exams. The catch is it takes over 6 months to go through the process & I had to work to eat. Thus I am "not disabled." because I was working. I took early SS retirement. Fine, so now I have the income so I don't have to work to eat. I'm not eligible for Medicare for another 3 years & once on SS retirement, I am no longer eligible for disability. Still in the same boat. My income is $944/month, including Food Stamps. The illegal immigrant receives even less help than I do.
Let me add that I know several working poor people who have had heart attacks & their only affordable treatment is nitroglycerin + other stopgap medications to arrest (not prevent) the next one.
Most of these will die prematurely, needlessly.
So you have a choice. Continue whining about illegals getting a "free" ride or go out & do something about the overall problem. I think most of us know what your choice will be. Prove us wrong.

Not necessarily born here but people who have contributed to our NHS via taxes and NI contributions, rather than people that just come here and drain our already overburdened NHS with putting anything in.
As for laws, anybody entering this country should be expected to abide by our laws or get out, simple as that.

They are a huge number of foreign people working for the NHS. I went to hospital recently and the mojority of doctors were foreign, the nurses were mostly British. We would be in a right state if they didn't work for us. I think people who smoke, drink, do drugs should pay for their own treatment because it's their fault they are ill. It would maybe make people think about what they are doing to themselves. I know a woman who had cancer which was treated and she has the all clear now. she still smokes and it makes me mad.

So are you suggesting that it should refuse to treat:
- Tourists?
- Overseas nurses and doctors who work for the NHS themselves?
- Anyone with a criminal conviction (this is about 1/3 of adult men)?
- People who have been granted asylum because they were victims of torture in their home country?
- 1 in every four Londoners (the % born overseas)?

My brother has never worked therefore never paid into the welfare state, but he was born here, where would he stand as far as NHS treatment is concerned. Don't get me wrong it miffs me off that any Tom Dick or Harry can come to the U.K to get treatment, but there are enough of our own Welfare scroungers to pay for the NHS twice over. There is no simple solution, I only wish there were!! Merry Christmas xx

so if you get a parking ticket you'd not expected to be treated on the NHS? what about if you are visiting here on a holiday? I have had great treatment abroad (in the Ukraine) because the UK and the Ukraine have an agreement.
I know where you are coming from but there are too many problems with easy solutions.
