I would like to comment first on Shockey Monkey's answer:
It is an old design, but they are still updating it. Boeing 747-400ER is the most reacent verson, and it was made in 2004. The newest verson of the Boeing 747 will be the boeing 747-8
And, bonflalien's answer:
The boeing 747 is not going to be retired anytime soon. They are still updating and improving the 747 with new versons. The newest that is being developed now, is the boeing 747-8.
The 747 is the most popular and well known aircraft, and one of the most sucessfull aircrafts ever produced. The boeing company would not even think of retireing it anytime soon -- the future of the company partially depends on the 747. New versons will always be ordered by airlines because they have the strong sucessfull background.

The Boeing 747 is a large aircraft that has evolved over the years. It is a double-decked aircraft with about 20 seats on the top and can fit about 350 in the entire craft. Most of them are being retired for cargo use. You can look it up on Yahoo! Images if you don't know what they look like.

It's a large transport aircraft manufactured by Boeing. It can be easily recognized by the large bubble shape at the forward section of the fuselage. Japan Airlines is one of the largest users of the B-747 so look for an example of one of their aircraft & it will probably be a B-747.

Seriously? Because this is one of the best known aircraft in the world.
It's the world's most successful long range 4 engined jet. It defined the term Jumbo. It is the aircraft of choice for many long range routes. It is the heaviest commercial jet in regular use (C5 Galaxy and various Russian aircraft are heavier but not often used).
Have a look at the Boeing page, below.

The first big *** super jumbo airliner that saved Boeing's same about 40 years ago. Still being modified and still selling all over the world. I wouldn't say it will be retiring soon.
