No soda, gum or anything sticky. Try to avoid hard foods like raw carrots. Your orthodontist should tell you what you should and should not eat.

Well, your orthodontist will give you a list of foods to avoid the day you get your braces on, but I'll let you know what some of the forbidden items are:
Ice cubes (like, don't chew on them)
Popcorn
Gum
Really cold foods like ice cream (you can use a spoon but don't bite directly into an ice-cream cone!)
Hard candy (suck, don't chew)
Taffy
I will also tell you that I ate every item on the forbidden list for the two years I had braces, and I'm fine, but it was a real pain in the butt to clean them off after eating a few of those things on the list.
Now I'll tell you the things that aren't on the list that are really hard to eat with braces:
Bread- when you bite into a sandwich, bread will stick right onto your braces, making you look horrid, so try to avoid it, or just be really scrupulous about checking them in a mirror after you eat.
Spinach-same deal like the bread- nothing looks more gnarly than green **** stuck in your braces.
Oreo cookies- if you like to eat them like I do-by scraping the cream off first with your teeth- prepare to kiss Oreos goodbye for a while, because the braces get in the way and you can't scrape the cream off.
Your fingernails- I had to give up biting my nails because my braces blocked my teeth from really being able to get in there.
Popcorn balls- just don't go there...
Milky Way and Snickers- SO not a good idea!!!!!! Nougat is not your friend!
Good luck!

Braces are fragile and may come loose if hard or sticky foods are eaten. Most regular foods can be eaten, however there are foods that you must be careful when eating.
Harder foods need to be cut or sliced before eating. Smaller bites should be taken when biting into hard foods. SOME of these foods include:
Bagels
French Bread
Pizza Crust
Taco Chips
Apples and Fruits
Carrots and Raw Vegetables
Steak
Corn on the Cob
Sticky, chewy foods (mainly candy) should not be eaten at all with braces. SOME of these foods include:
Carmel
Taffy
Jolly Ranchers
Starburst
Warheads
Nuts
Chewy Fruit Snacks
Bubble Gum
Frozen Snicker Bars
Skittles
Gushers
Popcorn Seeds
REMEMBER: This is just a list of SOME of the foods that should be avoided or eaten with care. Please be careful when deciding what to eat. If braces are broken or loose from carelessness, it slows the progress of your treatment down and your braces may need to stay on longer.

Don't even attempt to eat any apples or caramel, and bubble gum (though the sugar free gum never bothered me)... I really didn't have too bad of a problem with other foods, you can eat pretty much everything... just know that the first couple of days when you get your braces on (or tightened) your teeth are going to be really sore until they adjust to the strain... stick to the softest food possible, or cut your food up into small pieces to keep chewing to a minimum.

in the beginning, anything that requires a lot of chewing, like jerky. it will hurt like crazy.
rather than tell you what not to eat, i'll tell you what you should eat
soup but not one that has a lot of stuff in it. tomato is good, even if the little tomato pieces get stuck sometimes.
mashed potatoes
and so on
be sure to take a multivitamin until your mouth gets used to it and the pain subsides. you'll be losing a lot of necessary nutrients because your diet will be so small.

peanuts, hard candy, now and laters, bubble gum, raw veggies (unless they are cut small and you chew with back teeth), chewy food ie caramel....popcorn (edible but hard to clean afterwards), apples....you can really eat almost anything if you do it right...although i wouldnt suggest bubble gum you can chew stick gum (preferably sugar-free) with your back teeth and the chewing motion and pressure will probably help with the pain you will initially feel...i had them for five years and only broke mine once on a now and later that got stuck (melted) to the bracket and when i tried to pull it off it broke.....never again though i learned to be very careful!...good luck!

nothing stickie, carmels, gummy bears worms ect. nothing hard like candy or raw carrots. you can eat most anything you like just be careful that you dont pop or pull off your brackets. If it happens dont panic just call and see if they want you to come in and get it back on. keep your teeth clean if possible brush after you eat if not at least rinse real goo. good luck
