When, in German, do you use mein compared to meine?

I'm taking German 1 and was wondering if anybody could help me with this. we haven't gone over it yet and it's driving me crazy.

some people are a little wrong with that. the mein/meine does NOT depend on if YOU are masculine or feminine but the thing you talk about. so it's "mein Buch" because Buch is masculine but "meine Katze" because Katze is feminine and "mein Auto" because Auto is neuter.

If the word it belongs to is male or neuter, then it is "mein"

der Bleistift - mein Bleistift
das Kind -mein Kind

If it is female , it is "meine"

die Blume - meine Blume

This is of course all nominative, the possessive pronouns change through the cases, the endings are just the same as the ones of the indefinite articles "ein", und "eine".

Mein for masculine or neuter singular "possessions".
Meine for feminine or plural.

there are three different kinds of mein (well in the basics) for German..im guessing you've learned about feminine, masculine nad neuter. for example der is for male, die is for female and das is for neuter...so if you were a male you would use mein, but if you were female you would use meine...
basically if i were talking to you (im female) i would say...
Das ist meine Etui...
but you would say...
Das ist mein Etui.. ok?
