Basically it means that "I do not know."
Some may call me an atheist. However, I believe there are still things we do not fully understand. So I cannot say that without a doubt that there is nothing else.
The one thing I can say however, if there is a God or afterlife of some kind, it is nothing like any human doctrine has described it.
This is why I choose the term agnostic over atheist. There are some people who call themselves atheists that in my "opinion" are actually agnostic. I guess it depends on how you define agnosticism.

The term is used to describe those who are unconvinced or noncommittal about the existence of deities as well as about other matters of religion. Early Christian church leaders used the Greek word gnosis (knowledge) to describe "spiritual knowledge". "Agnostic" came from the union of it to the Greek / Latin prefix a, and was originally coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1869 to describe his philosophy. Agnosticism is not to be confused with religious views opposing the doctrine of gnosis and Gnosticism— these are religious concepts that are not generally related to agnosticism.

A = Not/No
Gnost = Know/Known
ic = State of being
It meant unknown. They do not know if there is a god. Probably don't really care. Huxley didn't give it much though and was tired of being called an atheist so he invented the term.

Rather than making a full decision to believe or not believe, being agnostic is when you hold uncertain whether things exist or not beyond the material world.
