homes in my area that are recently built usually have a 3 wall metal chimney....meaning the pipe has 3 metal pipes about an inch space between ea. of the 3,leaving the flue in the center with approx 8-10 inches dia for smoke to travel up and out. the other 2 jackets or wall metal pipes are designed to allow cooler air to circulate down and around the inner jacket walls thus creating a cool to the touch chimney then making it possible to penetrate thru walls ,ceilings and or attics of the wood or flamable structure of the home...............A thimble is a device used to place on a persons finger or thumb to protect them when using a needle and thread for sewing heavy or thick material.

This is something you have to go through with your builder or, if your doing the work go to the building codes office at the County court house and ask for someone, bring your plans with you.
What's code in my area is very different although it may be just as safe, in your area.

Standard depends on the local codes in your area. Call around to a few home inspectors and ask if you can pick their brains for free info.
