Its in a cat's nature. I would go with the water spray bottle in the face. It may seem cruel but after awhile of being sprayed they will start to learn. My cat run's when she simply sees the bottle. They know what it is.
Good Luck.

You cannot have a tree. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment for a cat.........Not only do you put a tree up in the house but THEN you decorate it with wonderful moving objects.
That is like taking a kid to Toys R Us and telling them they can't touch or have anything..........You could probably be turned in for cat abuse. That poor cat.......
Here is a short story about a Christmas tree. I was married to an idiot. We had two cats. He HAD to have a real tree. I was tired of arguing and told him to do whatever, but he would be very sorry for even thinking about it. Up goes the tree and he spends an entire evening decorating it. In the middle of the night I hear a loud THUMP and cats yelling......Oh dear, guess what happened?
As he jumped out of bed my words to him were, "hurt one of those cats and you are dead meat!" Tree, bulbs, etc. all over the room. Next day he is so mad he tied the tree to the wall......Still did not keep the cats from getting in the tree. They liked it even more because they could play in it and it didn't fall.
We divorced shortly after that and to this day I am sure he doesn't have any pets. But I hear he does have a tree every Christmas.......................TAKE THE TREE DOWN..........

Get a squirt gun.
I use one and it has worked perfect for me. Every time your cat goes toward the tree, or touches the tree, squirt the cat. He/she really won't like it and run away.
This should only take a few tries, or maybe more, and he/she will avoid the tree to avoid getting squirted.
This workes on everything. My cat knows if I even pick up my squirt gun because she listens for the sound of the water sloshing around and she stops doing whatever it is automatically. lol
I love it. It is important however, to use this as a training tool, and not a play tool. And only when necessary.
Good luck!

Put your tree in a room that you can shut the door.
I learned to live with it. My cats are very careful about tip-toeing around the ornaments whilest they're climbing it. Haven't lost one yet and I have an expensive collection. I also put a few on the bottom that they can knock about, knock off and play with around the house. They deserve to have some Christmas fun too.

I also have cat problems. The cat will uncontrollably bite any visitors to my house and attempt to jump on them. He also will try to eat the fake christmas tree and the decorations.
I currently have a question out there researching a "cat muzzle". Hopefully I can find something before I get sued for my cat biting someone....

I'd prefer the shocking collars, but I don't like cats very much, or real Christmas trees at all.
