Hi Kristin...for when you are not able to watch the cat and mist it away consider using double sided sticky tape to prevent counter surfing. Cats dislike having their paws stuck to the tape and eventually will learn to avoid areas which are unpleasant.

Yep, I was going to suggest the spray bottle. I have my Christmas tree out now and my cat loves getting in it. If I just so much as pick up my spray bottle, she runs and hides lol. I don't even have to spray it anymore, but what is even funnier, is she loves playing in the tub water before I take a shower every morning. She spends a few minutes batting it around...go figure. =)

Put double-stick tape (or make "rolls" of regular tape) and put them on the edges of the counter. Cats don't like getting caught up in the tape and will avoid the counter.
You can also try Cayenne pepper sprinkled on the counter, this also works outside when cats choose your planting beds for litter boxes. They don't like the smell/taste.

I used the rubber carpet saver that has the little ridges on the bottom, turn it upside down on the counter top ..cats hate that on their feet, you can get it at the hardware store, it is used for heavy traffic areas. after a while of jumping on that the cat wont want to get up there any more

nicely you stated you keep the counters sparkling, and cats will sit down everywhere thats comfortable to them. I mean my cats somtimes sit down contained in the sink i do not see what's amazingly comfortable about that. besides perhaps they don't sense they have everywhere else to sit down or that is the most comfortable position at your residence. Why do not you you purchase some catnip and sprinkle it in an section that is out of how or the position you opt for them to sit down. wish this helped :-)

I've also used tin foil since cats hate to walk on that. Another idea is to fill a tin with a few pennies and tape it shut. If you put it where he likes to walk, it will fall off and scare him.
(btw, do not use balloons like someone may suggest...cats have been known to eat the rubber and choke)

Two words for ya.......squirt gun! Actually, its sorta fun waiting for the cat to make his leap onto the counter and then to watch his reaction when he gets hit by the squirt gun (the water, that is). He never has any idea where its coming from, but he sure scrams quickly off the counter! (This works for Xmas trees, too!)

I bought something called "sofa scram" to keep Sophie off the buffet where I keep my plants. It's battery operated, and lets out a screech when weight is applied.
