I would let the government move you, as that's a long way to drive a moving van and it's just a lot easier to have someone do it for you.

That being said, watch the packers/movers like a hawk. Our first PCS I had stuff stolen, broken, and improperly packed (example: I had some of my great-grandmother's crystal, I asked the packers to put it in a better box than what I had it in - when I opened it up it was in the same box, in a bigger box with other stuff. It was ok but I was LIVID.)

Also, try to find a place to rent or buy before you get there. There's nothing worse than getting to a new place and having no where to live. Try www.ahrn.com to look for rentals at your new duty station. Or call the housing office and see what the waiting list is - maybe you'll get lucky and they'll be able to put you right into a house, but that's really doubtful.

just find out what the housing situation is like. if there is a long wait or not. then you can decide if you want to bring items with you that you may need ahead of time. let the government move you. its too much trouble and not worth the time and effort. make reservations for guest housing or lodging ahead of time. save enough money for deposits and rent if you have to live off post. other than that, i will have to say i'm sorry you're moving to kansas, although you are used to the cold so that's good.

We do a "partial dity" move. That way we can take our beds, clothes - more than a suitcase full anyway, plants, washer/dryer, any cooking pots and pans/utensils, tv, toys, etc that we need as soon as we get there. Sometimes HHG don't get to you for a week or more.

You still make money this way - and since we have 4 kids, some of this stuff we have to have right away

*****************************
Edited to add - we also put anything valuable that we didn't want to chance being broken or lost - such as all of our pictures, anything sentimental. And anything they wouldn't transport - such as the propane tank for the grill.

let the military do it for you.. DITY moves are a serious PITA.

get a sponsor as soon as you get hard copy orders. Call the housing office to find out if you can get put on the list now, or if you have to wait until you get there, if you want to live in housing.

Purge now.. have a garage sale, toss away old and broken stuff that's just lying about.

I am asumming this is a military move? My husband and I always packed up and moved ourselve. You make money quite a bit of money if you move yourself. And, the one thing we enjoyed doing was using the money they gave us for lodging and food to stop and see all the states along the way. Plus, we also stopped and visited family that we hadn't seen in awhile.

Let the gov't move you. Let them come in and pack up all your stuff and move it for you. The DITY move is just too much work, plus you probably won't get reimbersed for a year.

Good Luck!

The military has moving crews (free) . . . you call, they come do ALL the work, even if your are only an E2 . . .
You just need to plan for the culture change !
