It's different for each child. I've always heard girls tend to start talking sooner than boys too.

I have a 21 month old son who said his first word around 9 months old. By the time he was 18 months, he said about 50 words. Since 18 months, his vocabulary has increased a lot in a short time, he says well over 200 words and puts 4-5 words together.

My daughter is 25 months old and up until about 23 months she didn't have many words at all (maybe like 5 total). Now just 2 months later she has close to 100 and has started putting sentences together. Our Dr. was concerned when around 17 months she didn't have ANY words so we began the long process of getting speech evaluations/therapy. Honestly, I think it's just a bit of a delay for my daughter - nothing serious. And I don't think that the speech therapy helps much, since we only got approved for once a week, and half the time the therapist cancels on us. I think it's just different for every child. Good luck!

all different ages. 1st word is usually around 12 months old. by the time a child is 2 they would be on average saying a good few words but not sentences. although i look after 7 one year olds during the day and one of them has been speaking full sentences since he was 15 months. and can count to ten. although other children in the group dont speak at all even the oldest few. i would say normally chldrens speech takes off by about 2 1/2

I have three. My son could not say anything until 2 1/2, I took him to the doctor and got a referal, we saw a speech pathologist, and now he is in a head start program. He is 4 1/2 and has speech delay. My daughter is two and is fluent in English, can speak some Spanish and French. My baby is eleven months can combine two words and says about fifteen words. Mama, Dada, Ba Ba, Bye, Dog....etc. Not always clear. My point is that all are different. If not intelligible by two, see a doctor.

It depends on the child. My first talked whole sentences by the time she was one. My second child didn't talk until he was two or three. My third child talked pretty good by 18 months or so. My fourth is one is 1 1/2 and just now starting to say more words.
So, as you can see - it just depends. If you are worried they aren't talking enough ask your Dr.

I was worried about my second child because my first talked so soon. Now he is the one that doesn't ever quit talking. hahaha.

my kids started saying more than 2 or 3 words at a time when they were about 2 years old.

My observation is that this is quite slow in comparison to other kids they playwith. I think it depends on what else is going on,my kids learn English, German and Dutch, so this has slowed them down. Kids with 1 language are much quicker at talking.

Think it also depends on whether you are home full time with them, or if they are in creche all day, where the child /adult ratio is not as good as at home.

You can stimulate yourchild to talk by making agame of naming everything when you get them dressed, make food etc.

They will talk, and then you will wish they didn't!!!

My child is 26 months and i would say apart from the normal words "mum", "daddy", "cat", "dog", "drink", "milk" he didn't start talking properly till the month before his second birthday.
But all toddlers speak at different times, i know babies that were talking in sentences from 18 months and some toddlers that didn't start talking till they were 3.
