It's similar to saying "I partied with Emilio Estevez in Vegas."

Is there someone you admire, but is so popular or powerful that they are unreachable? Say, someone in government or the entertainment industry? Imagine that person were to give you an invitation to come and have dinner with him/her in their home? Suppose they repeat this over and over. You would gain a personal relationship, not just a "fan" base. Jesus takes it further than that. Salvation takes you into the extreme personal-ness of adoption and marriage.
I illustrate this (with scriptural text as proof) in my study below. A personal relationship is one of several main facets of Christianity that separates it from all other religions.

Note that before I accepted Jesus into my heart 36 years ago, all I had was religion. ie went to church with no personal relationship. However, after that day in 1970, everything changed. It became real. It became personal. It became, well, hard to describe--awesome!

Many christians are believers, but they do not have a relationship with God. If you are a true believer and you truly except Jesus Christ into your heart you will know God personally. Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship.

when one says they have a personal relationship with Jesus, it means that YOU KNOW that when you're emotionally, financially down and out, hurting, with NO ONE to turn to that He is ALWAYS there to comfort and care for you.
And HE WILL deliver as long as you believe and have faith that He will. He is just there...no other way to explain it.
It's hard to explain to someone who's never experienced this.

Well, I have read of Benjamin Franklin, and Mother Teresea, and I can read their bio's, but I cannot have a personal relationship with them because 1. they are dead. 2. I probably wouldn't be in their circle if they weren't.
Jesus, I can have a personal relationship with. He knows me better than me. I can talk and he can talk back. If I pay attention, He will talk first. Mostly He loves me and I love Him.
be blessed.

It means, to me, that I have a constant relationship with HIM. I know when HE is speaking to my spirit and I can tell when HE is with me. It is about an inner peace even when things around me are going badly. I KNOW that HE is with me.

He is closer than a brother, closer than my wife of 30 years. He walks with me and talks with me and tells me I am his child.
