my computer recomended that I automatically update IE from version 6 to 7, so I duly clicked yes, went through the whole setup and now the program just won't open. There is an icon on the desktop, but every time i click it, it flashes as if it'll open, then it just shuts down. No error message, nothing? Is there a solution? Muc obliged.

Have you restarted your system?

Go back to add and remove programs and remove IE 7, which will take you back to IE6. Then download IE 7 again and carefully be sure as download you follow directions like shut off your antivirus etc as it is coming in. I had same problem and that is how I corrected it. Doing fine now.

You only need to do a search on here to see how many people are having problems with IE7. The best thing to do is download Mozilla Firefox available from http://www.mozilla.com/ Its faster, more user friendly, easily customizable to suit your need and no problems.

There is an alternative I recommend: remove IE7 in Control Panel/Add remove programs and install FireFox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
I was initially skeptical, but it does more and more efficiently than IE. And has lots of great add ons to simplify your browsing.
