Check with your vet. Since the new girl was spayed at the shelter you don't know if she was/is in heat when you got her. If she was already hormonal when she was spayed, that would explain her engorgement and her behavior. Give her a few days to calm down hormonally and she should be fine. But again, this is a good question to ask your vet.

If she was spayed in the middle of her heat cycle, yes, she'll act like that for several days after her uterus and ovaries have been removed. Being bred like that before she has healed can cause her internal sutures to tear and she might start bleeding internally, as well as be open to infections.

The two dogs should not have been left together so soon after one just had a major surgery, whether she was in heat at the time or not. That's just common sense. She is supposed to be CONFINED for 7-10 days after surgery to allow healing, and to keep her from accidentally hurting herself and causing other complications from too much activity too soon after a major abdominal surgery. That would have prevented him from having access to her.

If you adopted her more than 2 weeks ago, however, then she either wasn't spayed at all, or there was a remnant of ovarian tissue left behind....enough to produce the hormones of the heat cycle. If that's the case, an additional surgery will be necessary to remove it. You need to have her evaluated by your own veterinarian ASAP.

Keep an eye on her, if a vet leaves even a part of an ovary behind, you can get a girl that goes in heat. Are you sure she was spayed?

The thing with spaying female dogs is that they could have not done it right....or not done it at all. Does she have a scar from the spay? Take her to your vet so they can see if she was spayed correctly.

What does the vet say?

I find that the vet is the perfect person to ask any kind of medical question to. That's why they went to school, they would have the best answer to any kind of question.

My old dog still humped for months. He was dry but had the urge. He got over it
