Knocking can be several things. You can make a few changes to see if the knocking is affected.

Oil: Have you had the oil changed regularly? If not, now is a good time.

Water: Knocking can be caused by low coolant. Replace with a good coolant or mixture.

Gas. Knocking is also caused by low grade fuel, burning incorrectly in the engine block. This can also cause backfiring and sluggish response. Change to a higher grade for a tank or two to see if there is a difference.

Could be your fuel, you have have a low octane fuel. Try filling up with the highest octane fuel and see if you still have the same problem.

You either need to rebulit the engine or replace it.
